Our project for the week was to help prepare the church building for a cement roof. The temporary tin roof was dismantled and transported elsewhere (with the trailer I told you about before). The sharp edges of these heavy sheets of tin could have easily done serious damage to a hand or an arm.
Workers were constantly going up and down ladders with heavy and awkward loads all week. Men, women and teens worked much of the day perched 10 feet above a cement floor, sometimes on narrow boards.
Much debris was moved in and around the construction site, revealing dangerous scorpions hiding in the crevices.
On a side note, one team member actually found a scorpion in his shoe one morning (thankfully before putting it on), and the boys found one walking across their bedroom floor one evening. Even though these grade 10 boys proved during the week that they could WORK like MEN, we also learned that they could scream like girls!
Anyway, considering all the dangers at the work site and in our surroundings, we were able to praise God at the end of the week for completely answering our prayers for safety. On our return trip to Canada, one man confessed to me that he had a history of back problems as a result of a past car accident.
This is the man who swung a sledge hammer for the better part of a day to break out some of the original cement, and who hefted pails of gravel and sand up on his shoulder like there was nothing to it. He said that his personal miracle was that his back never hurt him once that week. Another team member gave it his all despite a history of sore knees and a sore shoulder, neither of which ailed him during our time there. God is our faithful protector and healer.
